Sporting CP skipper Morten Hjulmand made a bold claim ahead of manager Ruben Amorim’s departure this weekend. The manager will move to Premier League giants Manchester United from the Portuguese team. Amorim will take charge from interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy on the 11th of November. It appears the Sporting captain remains unfazed by his manager’s departure.
Manchester United most recently announced the signing of Ruben Amorim from Sporting CP until 2027 after dismissing Erik ten Hag. The dismissal came due to disappointing results. Amorim enjoyed a brilliant tenure at Sporting, winning the Primeira Liga twice, in 2021 and 2024. The club has also made a splendid start to the new season, remaining unbeaten in all competitions.
Ruben Amorim’s departure to United could pose a challenge to the club’s impressive showing so far. Sporting CP skipper Morten Hjulmand reiterated the team’s primary goal of winning the league title while highlighting that they do not need Ruben Amorim. He also expressed his sadness over Amorim’s departure but agreed that such opportunities are a part of football.
“It’s been a tough week, we are sad Ruben is leaving” 💬

Ruben Amorim leaves behind an impressive legacy at Sporting CP, boasting a best-win ratio of 76.92 percent, the best by any manager in the club’s history. He will take charge of the club for their upcoming two matches, against Manchester City in the UCL and Braga in the Primeira Liga. It turns out that his side comfortably defeated Manchester City in the UCL.
Ruben Amorim to make young Sporting CP defender his primary transfer target at Manchester United
A recent Sky Sports report revealed that Manchester United-bound Ruben Amorim has made Sporting CP center-back Goncalo Inacio their top transfer target next summer. The 23-year-old defender, who made it through the Sporting academy ranks, could be a brilliant addition.
Goncalo Inacio emerged as one of the best young defenders in Europe over the last few years, becoming a pivotal part of Amorim’s Sporting side. He has made 185 appearances for the club while also winning the Primeira Liga Defender of the Month award on multiple occasions. A brilliant central defender, the Portuguese international is noted for his composure, passing abilities, and agility.

However, Man Utd also has a surplus in terms of center-backs, including Matthijs de Ligt, Lisandro Martinez, Leny Yoro, Harry Maguire, and others. United would need to sell Jonathan Evans or Victor Lindelof next season to make space for Inacio.
