Tshwane metro has vowed to unleash the full force of the law upon those found defiling city streets with trash.
This as Stanza Bopape Street leading into Cussonia Avenue in the east of Pretoria has been tainted by rubble.
Recently, the area was yet again cleared of the massive illegal dumping.
For several months, residents have been complaining the portion of land is a hotbed of illegal dumping along Stanza Bopape Street, stretching from the Colbyn wetland to Cussonia Avenue and part of Koedoespoort.
The area has been riddled with building rubble and household waste, which led to residents petitioning the metro last year to erect barriers along the road.
Residents wanted bollards or trenching on the roadside to stop the massive dumping along the N4 route, between the University of Pretoria engineering department and the Colbyn wetland.
Concerns have been raised that the illegal dumping posed a serious health risk to residents in the vicinity.
For some time now the metro has been in engagements with the UP for a long-term solution to secure the area, however recently the area has been cleared and warning billboards have been erected to deter illegal dumpers.
Metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo said illegal dumpers will be dealt punitive measures for infringement including a fine of up to R10 000.
Mashigo said the long-term solution for the illegal dumping includes the restriction of vehicle access, regular law enforcement and the public reporting suspicious activity in the area.
He said the engagement with the University of Pretoria has been very fruitful, which has resulted in the formulation of a feasible solution to deter further dumping.
Mashigo added that the city is taking a strong stance against illegal dumpers and is adding in a provision to the by-law to confiscate vehicles found dumping illegally.
He encouraged residents to report dumpers so that they face the full might of the law.
Mashigo said the metro has four landfill sites that can receive waste including Hatherley landfill site, Soshanguve landfill site, Garankuwa landfill site and Bronkhorstspruit landfill site.
“The dumping site closest to that area is the Hatherley landfill site, located along Solomon Mahlangu Road (on Makhatshula Str, the Hatherley cemetery road) adjacent the Hatherley Cemetery,” said Mashigo.
He added that there are also three privately-owned landfill sites around the city, which are also easily accessible for use by the general public.
