Tshwane deputy mayor and MMC for Finance Eugene Modise and Mamelodi stakeholders traded their work suits for overalls on Monday and got their hands dirty by taking part in the Rea Spana campaign.
The campaign was recently launched to accelerate service delivery through various interventions.
Modise was joined by local councillors at Solmaco Community Park next to Pitching Sports Ground in planting trees, the EPWP team picking up litter and the waste team clearing the area of illegal dumping.
He encouraged residents of Mamelodi to stop littering and even handed over waste plastic bags to hawkers operating next to Shoprite in Section 16, Mamelodi East to keep the community clean.
The deputy mayor also joined the electricity team on Hinterland Avenue, checking faults and fixing streetlights.
Modise said the roads team also did the road marking, and cleaned catchpits and roads listed on the programme.
Resident Sello Maphage said the community was happy with the streetlights being fixed because it was not safe to walk in the streets of Mamelodi at night.
“We must help each other and work together to make our township clean and better,” said Maphage.
He called upon business people to help with cleaning because they are also playing a big role in littering the streets of Mamelodi.
Modise said, “We won’t stop here. All reported and unattended service delivery matters will be attended to”.
Another resident, Koketso Mbatha congratulated local ward councillors for their effort in reporting these issues and getting their hands dirty by leading by example.
“Councillors must keep up the good work and must not stop here.”
He wished all ward councillors across Tshwane could be like that.
“I’m happy to see ward councillors getting their hands dirty and working. It shows our vote did not go to waste as we see they are taking part in the clean-up campaign,” said Mbatha.
