“Purple patch is over” – Fans laugh at Bayer Leverkusen as Xabi Alonso’s side drops nine points below Bayern Munich

Bayer Leverkusen’s ‘purple patch’ is seemingly coming to an end, after the club was held to a disappointing 1-1 draw by bottom-placed Bochum. The draw now finds Leverkusen in fourth position on the Bundesliga table, nine points behind leaders Bayern Munich.

The reigning Bundesliga champions have not been in the best of their form this season, winning just four out of their 10 matches. They have now continued with their poor form, and have drawn their three matches in the league. The club most recently lost 4-0 to Liverpool in the UCL. This is in stark contrast to their record last season under manager Xabi Alonso. They had created Bundesliga history by remaining undefeated last season, ending the 2023-24 season with 90 points, winning 28 out of 34 matches.

Patrik Schick opened the scoring for Leverkusen in the 18th minute after he sent a brilliant pass from Florian Wirtz past Bochum keeper Patrick Drewes. His strike hit the post, before rolling into the back of the net. Despite the visitors holding onto their lead for most of the match, Bochum kept the pressure on. Koji Miyoshi, who came in as a late 69th-minute substitute, scored a last-gasp leveler for the home side. He scored a goal from a close-range effort in the 89th minute, past goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky.

Meanwhile, table-toppers Bayern Munich secured an impressive 1-0 win over FC St. Pauli. This helped them extend their lead on top of the table to five points. Leverkusen next face 13th-placed Heidenheim in their next Bundesliga encounter.
