Osun governor, Emir of Zazzau want Yoruba to preserve culture, language

Osun state Governor, Ademola Nurudeen Adeleke, and the Emir of Zazzau, HRH Alhaji Nuhu Bamali, have called on Yorubas in Kaduna to preserve their culture and language, stressing the importance of passing down traditions to younger generations.

They made the call at the Osun State Indigene Association (OSIA) award and fundraising ceremony held in Kaduna.

In his address, Governor Adeleke urged the Yorubas in diaspora to actively promote their culture wherever they reside, lamenting the decline of Yoruba language use among younger generations.

Represented by Mr Olakunle Alao, the governor said, “It’s disheartening to see many parents not teaching their children Yoruba,” he said. He emphasized on the need for Yorubas abroad to be good ambassadors of Osun and to uphold their heritage.

The governor also advised Osun indigenes to uphold the state’s reputation and avoid involvement in criminal activities. While encouraging unity, he urged them to support one another and remain connected to their roots, regardless of the allure of life abroad.

Representing the Emir, Alhaji Jibril Sani, the District Head of Kawo, commended Osun indigenes for their peaceful and loving nature.

“We should not borrow Western culture. Our tradition is our pride,” he stated, underscoring the significance of cultural preservation.

Speaking to journalists, Mustafa Omotosho, Vice President of the Osun State Indigene Association, called on Osun natives in Kaduna to register with the association.

Amid economic hardships, he urged members to remain law-abiding and avoid fraudulent practices, expressing hope for improved conditions in the future.

Omotosho also appealed to President Bola Tinubu to consider the difficulties faced by Nigerians and implement policies to alleviate their struggles.

“Government should cut down their expenses and let citizens breathe,” he stated.
