New York State Assemblyman Harvey Epstein was taken aback after watching himself get a humorous mention on Saturday Night Live (SNL) over the weekend. The 57-year-old politician, who is preparing to run for New York City Council’s District 2 seat next year, found himself the subject of a parody that referenced his campaign — and his name’s uncanny similarity to the infamous Harvey Weinstein and Jeffrey Epstein. The spoof took Epstein by surprise, but he later shared that he found the skit both funny and timely, particularly as he works to build public awareness around his campaign.
“It was a total surprise. Imagine if you were watching SNL and there was a parody about you,” Harvey Epstein told The New York Post on Sunday. Having watched SNL regularly, he never expected to see his name referenced on national television, especially in a humorous light. “I’ve had people joke about my name and how it’s similar to those other Epsteins, but not like this — not on a national stage,” he laughed.
The parody, which featured actor John Mulaney as Epstein, cleverly poked fun at the assemblyman’s shared surname with the two notorious figures. In the skit, Mulaney, fully embracing Epstein’s look with a clean-shaven head and earrings, quipped, “Listen, is my name ideal? Of course not. You think I don’t know that?” As Mulaney delivered the punchline, he held up placards showing images of Harvey Weinstein and Jeffrey Epstein with bold labels stating “Not Me” and “Different Guy,” as he reassured voters, “I give you my word as an Epstein.”
Reflecting on the parody, Epstein admitted he found Mulaney’s portrayal “hilarious” and appreciated the comedic approach. “John Mulaney was funny. It was a fun parody — iconic and sarcastic, hitting all the right points,” Epstein noted. He praised the humor in the skit, pointing out that it effectively balanced satire with a lighthearted jab at his situation, something he thought would resonate with audiences familiar with SNL’s signature style.
Beyond the humor, Epstein hopes that this unexpected moment in the national spotlight might help him connect with a wider audience as he campaigns for City Council. “I hope people know I’m a great candidate for the City Council. It gives me some exposure for the race,” he added, optimistic that viewers would see beyond the jokes and become interested in his platform and dedication to public service.
