House Of Villains Richard Hatch Screwed Up When He Dismissed Tiffany New York Pollard

When most people talk about the biggest reality show villains of all time, there is one Survivor star who comes to mind. Before there were enough Survivor seasons to rank, players were being medically evacuated, and Jeff Probst’s show had loads of Sole Survivors, Richard Hatch was the show’s first villain. So notorious that even Survivor fans who are figuring out which seasons to watch first know who he is, Richard arguably is more famous than the show’s other great players.

Given how notorious Richard is, it makes sense that he was cast in House of Villains. Unfortunately for Richard, something that he did once he began playing House of Villains didn’t make sense. Even Richard recognizes that it was a mistake for him to dismiss Tiffany ‘New York’ Pollard when they were in the House of Villains house together.

House Of Villains’ Richard Hatch Grew To Regret How He Treated Tiffany ‘New York’ Pollard

When fans learned that E! was going to be airing a reality show called House of Villains, the main thing that everyone expected was there to be a lot of drama. However, the surprising truth is that a lot of the show’s cast members get along pretty well a lot of the time.

Still, there is always time on House of Villains for a good old-fashioned reality show fight and there have definitely been some of those over the show’s two seasons. Unfortunately for Richard Hatch, he was at the center of one of House of Villains’ worst relationships.

During the show’s second season, Richard didn’t get along with Tiffany “New York” Pollard. After Richard was banished from the House of Villains house, he spoke out about the mistake he made in his relationship with “New York.”

In October 2024, Richard was interviewed by TV Insider about his House of Villains experience.

While talking to TV Insider, Richard referred to “New York” as “it.” During the same interview, Richard explained that he used the word “it” because he was referring to the character he perceived “New York” plays during her reality show appearances.

“I say “it” because I’m talking about the character.”

That context is important to know while examining what Richard had to say about “New York” during the rest of the TV Insider interview.

In response, Richard explained that even though he’s starred in a slew of reality shows and spent years in prison, he’d never known anyone who treated people the way that “New York” did.

“Well, I’ve never in my entire life, literally this long life, ever seen anyone interact with others the way she did. I’ve never seen anyone talk to other people the way she did.”

Richard then went on to talk about how he treated “New York” because of how he perceived her behavior.

During
House of Villains
, Richard Hatch was eliminated from the game during the beginning of the fourth episode.

As Richard explained, he “dismissed” New York and he has since realized that was a mistake.

“And so, at my own expense, I dismissed her. I learned more about her later, but right from the get-go, I didn’t pay attention to it. I thought it was unreasonable to think I would bother to talk to it. It was just irrational, and it was yelling things at people and calling people things… It was so off-putting that I just dismissed it. It didn’t bother me, just disengage.”

Richard also told TV Insider‘s interviewer about why decided to dismiss her and his belief that “New York” figured out he wanted nothing to do with her. “Why would I talk to that?” is kind of what was in my head, and she picked up on that.”

That same Collider article examined why Richard may now feel it was such a mistake to make “New York” an enemy.

The article brought up the fact that “New York” wanted to sleep in a bed that Camilla Poindexter from Bad Girls Club: Las Vegas already claimed. However, when “New York” asked for Camilla to give up the bed, she instantly agreed. Collider’s article argued that was an indication of the level of power that “New York” wielded in the House of Villains house.

Exclusive: Jonathan Penner Revealed The Jeff Probst That Survivor Fans Don’t Get To See

Survivor’s Jonathan Penner exclusively told TheThings about who Jeff Probst is when he isn’t on camera.

During a challenge, “New York” called Richard Hatch a “crafty b****.” In response, Richard asked “New York” if she was “an adult” and if she “would like to listen [to him] or not.”

The next morning, the two of them talked about those comments and things didn’t go well. The argument began with “New York” confronting Richard. “I feel like there’s a little funk in the air when I walk in a room. I feel like you don’t want that much to do with me.”

In response, Richard told “New York” that he didn’t want her to feel that way. Richard followed that up by telling “New York” that it wasn’t the case that he didn’t want anything to do with her.

While it seems like Richard said that to end the drama, it had the opposite effect as “New York” called him out in front of a large group of their fellow competitors.

You’re a terrific liar Richard. That’s exactly what you’re doing right now.

Needless to say, being labeled a liar by someone with clout in the house isn’t a good thing. Richard responded to what “New York” said by telling her that they didn’t need to talk anymore if she thought he was a liar. That prompted “New York” to tell Richard that they were going to talk since they lived in a communal space and she wasn’t done there. “I’m going to ride you until you tell me truth.”

It is easy to see how that argument could have set Richard up to be banished from the House of Villains house. That said, one of the most fascinating parts of the argument was the fact that Richard and “New York” spoke so casually throughout the interaction. It seemed like neither of their heart rates sped up, despite how consequential the argument very likely was.
