Carlos Alcaraz began the year without a title in the first three months. He, however, did brilliantly at the Indian Wells Masters to claim his first title. The Spaniard then went on to win the French Open and Wimbledon, while also claiming the silver medal at the Paris Olympics. During the North American swing, he suffered a dipping form, winning just one match in two tournaments.
Nonetheless, he bounced back in the Asian swing, winning the China Open and reaching the quarterfinals of the Rolex Shanghai Masters. On the other hand, Alexander Zverev had to wait until May to win his first title of the season. The 27-year-old defeated Nicolas Jarry to win the Italian Open. He did reach the German Open final but succumbed to a disappointing loss against youngster Arthur Fils. His consistent form led him to reach the semifinals of the Cincinnati Open and the quarterfinals of the US Open.
Then, Zverev reached the quarterfinals of the Vienna Open after a three-set loss against Lorenzo Musetti. At the Paris Masters, he played his best tennis, beating the likes of Stefanos Tsitsipas and Holger Rune before defeating home favorite Ugo Humbert in a straight set. In Turin, he claimed a decisive 6-4, 6-4 win over Andrey Rublev in the first group match.
