The state chairman, African Democratic Congress (ADC) Yobe state chapter, Umar Kalli Alhaji, said the party was not properly informed by the Yobe State Independent Electoral Commission (SIEC) about the local government election in order for it to submit
list of candidates for chairmanship and councillorship positions, saying it is a violation of the 2022 Electoral Act.
Alhaji made this known in a press statement made available to journalists in Damaturu, Yobe state capital.
Umar Kalli stated that as a result, the party wrote a letter to the SIEC demanding the extension but to their greatest dismay, the commission ignored the request and proceeded with the election.
The statement read apart,”The African Democratic Party (ADC) as an opposition party, filed a motion in the state High Court Damaturu, seeking the court to restrain the Yobe State Independent Electoral Commission (SIEC), from proceeding with the polls in line with the 2022 Electoral Act.
“However, as our case with YSIEC is pending the high court, our attention has been drawn to social media platforms that our party (ADC) is among the 9 political parties that participated in the election, which is not true.
“The solicitors of our party (ADC) and of the Yobe State Independent Electoral Commission (YSIEC) were in the state High court awaiting the outcome of the judgment challenging the legitimacy of the election.
“The same YSIEC that refused to recognize the existence of ADC as a political party, failure to serve six month notice for the party to submit its candidates, it’s the same electoral commission that produces ballot paper with ADC’s logo knowing fully well that the party has no candidates in the election.
“As we are patiently waiting for the state High Court judgment, our great party calls for the cancellation of the local government election, which was conducted by the shameless state independent electoral commission (SIEC) because the process lacks credibility, fairness, and justice.”
Responding to ADC allegations when contacted, the chairman SIEC, Dr. Mamman Muhammad, said the Commission was not aware of any case filed before any court by ADC.
He revealed that, before the LG election, the Commission gave a one year notice to political parties in the state and even repeated same notice after six months.
