1000-lb Best Friends Season 3 Episode 2 Recap: Putting In The Work

In the new season of TLC’s 1000-lb Best Friends, the cast members of the reality TV show navigate both their weight-loss journeys and their personal relationships. In the last episode, the three best friends got into a screaming match, with Vannessa walking away from the conversation entirely.

In this episode, we see whether Meghan, Ashely, and Vannessa are able to patch up the holes in their friendship. We also get a look into the lives of two new weight-less support group members, Scott and Tina.

1000-lb Best Friends Vannessa Asks For Her Friends Back

We pick up with the same fight between Vannessa and Meghan and Ashely; after Meghan calls Vannessa a baby, she turns around and comes back to the table, returning to the argument. “I love you and it hurts me that we’re at the place that we’re at,” Meghan tells her, “But I just feel like you kind of abandoned me,” she adds, referring to Vannessa’s lack of support of her.

Vannessa says she didn’t realize she was doing that, admitting she knows she can be aggressive and genuinely didn’t understand she was being too pushy with her friends. She asks for the chance to “build their friendship back,” which gives the other two pause.

Vannessa goes on to make her plea with the other two women:

Seeing your face today broke me. I want to try my best to continue to grow. I want to be a part of y’all. But if we’re not able to overcome, some friendships are lost.

For her part, Ashely says she’s not ready to be “buddy buddy” immediately. She feels Vannessa needs to prove that her behavior has changed more before she accepts her back as one of her closest friends again.

Scott Starts To Get Serious About His Health

Next, we catch up with Scott, one of Dr. Procter’s newer patients. Scott explains that he wasn’t always as overweight like he currently is, initially gaining weight in college and now at the biggest he’s ever been. Given all the health issues he’s been having, he wants to get serious about losing weight, and that day he has plans to go on a walk with Vannessa to talk about their experiences.

Before that, Scott shares with his mother that he’s considering bariatric surgery, per his conversation with Dr. Procter. His mother tells him it would take a lot of hard work — hard work she’s skeptical he’d be able to commit to, given his lack of discipline now. She’s honest with her son, saying she finds it “embarrassing” that he eats too much and too quickly, seemingly unable to control himself.

The Heartbreaking Way The Last Season of 1000 Lb Sisters Ended

1000-lb Sisters fans were devastated by the heartbreaking scenes during the show’s emotional fifth season finale.

On his walk with Vannessa, Scott admits he hasn’t done any form of exercise in the past year, and he’s nervous about the pace she might set. After a little more than a block, Scott confesses he needs a break, requesting a chair from the crew that he knows will support his weight.

Scott tells the cameras that he’s embarrassed about having to take a break, and that he’s also scared, knowing that one wrong move in his 600-pound body could result in a major injury. For her part, Vannessa realizes that maybe she shouldn’t push Scott too far too soon. That said, Scott is still determined to exercise some other way, knowing Dr. Procter wants him to lose 30 pounds.

Meghan Meets With Dr. Procter

Meghan goes to check in with Dr. Procter, wanting to talk about how she’s plateaued in her weight-loss journey. Though she’s already lost 200 pounds, Dr. Procter expects her weight to be much lower than it currently is. Meghan expresses her desire for a dull duodenal switch, but Dr. Procter needs to see a “compliance period” from her showing that she’s willing to put in the work to get her BMI to a level where the surgery is possible.

Meghan is shocked to learn that this means Dr. Procter wants her to lose 30-40 pounds in the next couple of months. Dr. Procter is direct in outlining his limits to her:

I want to get you to your goal weight, but I’m not willing to hurt you to get you there.

Tina Discusses Her Addiction To Food

Tina, a newer member of the weight-loss group, tells the cameras about how she, too, has struggled with her weight since her childhood. She’s invited everyone from the group over for a barbecue to spend some more time with people who understand her situation. It’s a kind gesture on her part, though some of the attendees are nervous ahead of time, as it will be the first time the three friends have been together since their argument in the last episode.

Tina gets even more personal in sharing about her life, disclosing that she and her husband originally met on a dating website for plus-sized people, and while she thought it might be “a fetish thing” to begin with, she feels that her husband truly loves and supports her. That said, the two haven’t been intimate at all in the past two years because she’s been too embarrassed to undress in front of him. Part of the reason why she wants to lose weight is so that she gets her confidence back as well.

Once everyone sits down to eat, Meghan notes it’s uncomfortable to see other people eating too much, saying that she sees some of herself in those individuals and that it’s hard not to comment on it. There’s also a little tension between Vannessa and Ashely and Meghan, as it’s the first time they’ve seen each other since their fight. Meghan shares with the table Dr. Procter’s weight-loss goal for her, saying she’s not only going to meet it, but exceed it.

After they eat, Meghan, Vannessa, and Ashely have a private conversation. Meghan says she’d encourage Vannessa bringing her son Jacob, who is nearly 500 pounds himself, to their support group. Seeing that Meghan cares about her son really touches Vannessa, and things seem to warm between the three old friends once again. “At the end of the day, I want to see what’s best for you all,” Ashely adds.

At the end of the episode, Tina goes to meet with Dr. Procter, telling him she’s slipped up a bit and has been indulging in fast food and sweets. Her husband Matt accompanies her, urging her to be honest with the doctor and saying that she could stand to “buckle down” some more. We end the episode with Tina getting on the scale, nervous about what her results will be, but the camera cuts out before she gets her answer.
