The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) suffered a significant setback Thursday as the Lagos State High Court in Ikeja acquitted Mr. Mark Obisesan and his co-defendants of all charges in a case that has dragged on for five years.
Justice I.O. Ijelu, in a strongly worded judgment, criticized the EFCC’s investigation as “haphazard and woeful,” stating that the prosecution failed to prove its case against the defendants.
The case, which began in 2019, involved allegations of possessing forged traveller’s cheques and conspiracy to purchase forged bank notes. Obisesan, along with Olumide Mcintoush, Bolaji Bakare, and Goodluck Bazunu, had consistently maintained their innocence throughout the prolonged legal proceedings.
Following the verdict, Obisesan expressed relief and frustration, saying, “It’s sad that the EFCC chose to waste state resources on a case they knew had no merit.” He highlighted the personal and professional toll of the five-year legal ordeal, citing lost relationships and business opportunities.
