Faulty cable causes widespread blackout in Pretoria east

A widespread power outage affected multiple areas in Pretoria east leaving residents without electricity since 23:39 last night.

The affected areas include Lombardy, Mooiplaats, Shere, Tygervalley, Olympus, Equestria and Faerie Glen.

According to Ward 101 councillor Malcolm De Klerk, the outage was caused by a faulty cable in Olympus, which tripped the 132kV transformer in Wapadrand.

He said repair teams are working to restore power with most areas expected to have supply reinstated within hours.

“However, parts of Olympus face an extended blackout of 10-12 hours due to necessary cable repairs,” said De Klerk.

De Klerk added that further updates will be provided in the coming hours.

He said residents are advised to remain patient and take necessary precautions during the outage.
