Dodgers’ Dave Roberts to miss Charlie Blackmon’s ‘big, old, ugly beard’ as outfielder RETIRES after 14 MLB years

Sunday’s game between the Colorado Rockies vs. Los Angeles Dodgers marked the finale of outfielder Charlie Blackmon’s MLB career. The Rockies veteran waved the game official goodbye after his retirement announcement last week on Monday. 

Blackmon spent 14 years with the Rockies, since his debut in Major League and has been a force to reckon with within his team. Even Dodgers manager Dave Roberts couldn’t help admitting that “he’s everything I would want in a baseball player – outside of that big, old, ugly beard” he joked.

For Roberts, Blackmon is one of his top five players that he likes to watch play. The Rockies honored the outfielder with No.19 etched at the Coors Field and made him trod out onto the center field by himself to receive all fans’ ovations and cheers. 

The organization’s done a really good job, just far exceeded expectations of celebrating the week and the moment. It’s just been really incredible for me and my family.

His wife Ashley and his kids Josie and Wyatt were present for the pregame ceremony where both the kids got to throw a pitch to Blackmon, and the outfielder even gave a speech for the last MLB game. The team also presented with a Toyota Tundra with No.19 added to its hood.

Rockies manager Bud Black talked about how they are considering keeping Charlie Blackmon within the organization for some off-field duties. He even hinted that the outfielder may join sometime during Spring Training to give his expertise, however, there’s no official notice yet.

Colorado Rockies third baseman Ryan McMahon commented that the way he plays the game has been an inspiration from Charlie Blackmon. “It’s all based off things I’ve learned from him,” he said. McMahon said Blackmon in his career has always been “the most unselfish person I’ve been round. The total pro’s pro.”

Fans showered him with congratulatory messages on social media and wished ‘Chuck Nazty’ all the best for his future endeavors. Even the Dodgers clapped for Blackmon to honor his MLB days. Check out some fan reactions below:

Blackmon played with the Rockies since his draft in 2008 and ended his career with 1,805 hits in 1,624 games. He further added one more hit against the Dodgers on Sunday saying, “It was really cool to end on a hit…One last time getting to savor it on the way out was really great.”
