Absolute living legend and Broadway icon Patti LuPone went on Hot Ones with fellow firecracker Aubrey Plaza yesterday, cycling through a series of intentionally awkward questions and answers spicier than the wings.
Patti and Aubrey visited Hot Ones both to promote their shared Marvel project Agatha All Along, and to engage in a “head-to-head” battle not unlike the game “Truth Or Dare,” as explained in a description box (which hinted at Patti’s “feud” with Madonna):
“Aubrey Plaza is an Emmy-nominated actress and Patti LuPone is Broadway royalty with three Tony Awards and countless legendary stage credits to her name. But today these Agatha All Along co-stars have two choices: Tell the truth, or suffer the wrath of the Last Dab. Whoever eats the most wings, loses!
“From Patti’s ongoing feud with Madonna, to Aubrey’s tarot reading abilities, these friends will either need to be honest, or go head-to-head with the Wings of Death. What habit of Patti’s did Aubrey find most annoying when they lived together?”
Hot Ones mentioned that Patti and Aubrey “lived together,” and in November, House Beautiful reported that the unlikely duo indeed were roommates after meeting on the set of Agatha All Along, and that Patti was like a “second mother” to Aubrey:
“Plaza, who [was] making her stage debut in an Off-Broadway revival of Danny And The Deep Blue Sea, reveals that she and LuPone [were then] currently cohabitating on the Upper West Side.
“‘[Patti] insisted,’ Plaza told Vulture. ‘She’s trying to whip me into shape.'”
During their Hot Ones showdown, Patti and Aubrey had amazing chemistry, as if they’d been close friends for decades:
Both women had pre-printed cards with questions, most of which were uncomfortable in nature, to raise the stakes and encourage them to sidestep answers and eat wings instead.
Eight minutes into Hot Ones, Aubrey picked up a card, laughed, and mused she “didn’t know how this one” would go.
The question referenced what Patti said about Madonna to Andy Cohen during an appearance on Watch What Happens Live, when Andy asked Patti about Madonna’s performance in Evita, and Patti opined:
“Madonna is a movie killer. She’s dead behind the eyes. She cannot act her way out of a paper bag. She should not be in films or on stage. She’s a wonderful, you know, performer for what she does, but she is not an actress.”
Aubrey read from the card, which was something more of a dare than a question about Patti’s assessment of Evita:
“During an appearance on Watch What Happens Live, you said Madonna was a terrible actress, and even called her a ‘movie killer.’ Look into the camera and apologize to the pop icon, or eat a death wing.”
As Aubrey repeated “I f*****g knew it” and “I love you,” Patti refused to either break eye contact or apologize:
But Patti had more to say.
Patti LuPone Doubled Down On Kim Kardashian’s Acting
Aubrey: ‘I Love You, I Love You. I Love You. I Just Love You.’
As mentioned above, Patti and Aubrey’s Hot Ones episode involved tense questions with a consequence: eating a “death wing.”
Aubrey asked Patti to reconsider her view on Madonna’s acting, and Patti decided to eat a death wing rather than take it back.
Not only did she not back down on Madonna, she continued speaking, and Patti herself brought up the topic of Kim Kardashian’s acting in what became another priceless moment.
Patti, still speaking about Madonna, seamlessly transitioned to shading Kim Kardashian in a delightful exchange with Aubrey:
[Patti]: “You know? There’s just some things some people can’t do, and you just gotta admit that you can’t do it. That’s all. Or don’t even try it, okay? Everybody can’t do everything.”
[Aubrey]: “Marry me.”
[Patti]: “Like Kim F*****g Kardashian, okay? Can we go there? Or shall I eat a wing?”
[Aubrey]: “I love you. I love you.”
As was the case with her remarks about Madonna, Patti also perviously tore into Kim during an April 2023 episode of Watch What Happens Live.
In an appearance alongside John Leguizamo, Patti told Andy that Kim’s American Horror Story role should have gone to a more established actress rather than a reality TV star.
Luckily for everyone, Aubrey and Patti’s joint project Agatha All Along debuts on Disney+ on September 18, with Patti playing a centuries-old Sicilian witch.
