McLaren now has the fastest car on the grid. Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri have found themselves in the title fight against Max Verstappen. However, it is Norris who has the best shot considering his points gap to the Dutch driver. Nevertheless, the Woking-squad is yet to implement team orders. Now, Nico Rosberg hinted at a potential reason behind this situation.
Previously, Zak Brown claimed that having two number 1 drivers was McLaren’s way of racing. Although, team boss Andrea Stella hinted that a decision will be made soon. Rosberg claimed that Oscar Piastri might have a specific number 1 clause in his contract which prevented him from playing second fiddle to Norris.
It is hard, but I think he has a corresponding clause in his contract, it will not be possible for him to help Lando.Nico Rosberg told Sky Sports F1
Moreover, Nico Rosberg praised the Australian for being a strong driver. The former F1 champion claimed that Oscar Piastri deserved to fight for wins in every race. The German highlighted that Piastri was still in contention to win the world title this season.
Oscar is also very strong, so in his view he deserves every chance of a GP win. In mathematical terms, he can also become world champion. He is not that far behind Lando. So it is difficult to ask him to sacrifice race victories.Nico Rosberg stated
Nico Rosberg advises McLaren to be ‘very very careful’
McLaren is in a tough spot regarding its two drivers. The British squad has allowed both its cars to race according to the ‘Papaya rules.’ Nico Rosberg highlighted that it’s a fine line that the team must tip-toe. As if Piastri is not treated fairly, he could lose trust in the team entirely.
As a team, you also have to be very, very careful, because it can mentally destroy a young driver if you suddenly do not treat him fairly. This can destroy trust sustainably.Nico Rosberg added
Certainly, McLaren’s biggest challenge for the remainder of the 2024 season seems to be its drivers. Despite having the fastest car, the British team could lose crucial points due to a rivalry between Norris and Piastri. As such, it remains to be seen how things pan out in the coming races.
