Mary Bonnet has opened up about the dark and traumatic history she explores in her new book, Selling Sunshine, and how she finds the strength to get through each day.
Mary Bonnet is a bubbly and vivacious fan-favorite on real estate reality TV show Selling Sunset. As Vice President of The Oppenheim Group, Mary has made quite the name for herself on and off our screens. In addition to handling some pretty impressive listings, fans regard her as a chilled-out personality who can maintain the peace. She admitted to having dark days when the cameras aren’t on her and shared with fans just how she “just keeps going.”
Mary is ‘open and honest’ in Selling Sunshine
Mary Bonnet appeared on the September 10 episode of Virtual Reali-Tea Podcast by Page Six, to discuss with hosts her upcoming book release.
Bonnet’s book, Selling Sunshine, holds the subtitle “Surviving Teenage Motherhood, Thriving in Luxury Real Estate, and Finally Finding My Voice.” It promises to be a deep dive into aspects of the Selling Sunset star’s traumatic past.
During the podcast, the host asks Bonnet how the pre-premiere jitters between the book and the show are different. Page Six argues the book is “much more personal” compared to the Netflix show which is an “ensemble” of characters.
The reality star sees it differently she argued: “I also have control over that and I know about this, yeah, so, this is my life.”
In comparison to the TV editing where she felt she had “no control over it” and often couldn’t believe what was happening.
Page Six touches on some of the traumatic content of the book and asks Mary how she decided what to include in her story and which bits to leave out.
She responded “for the most part” she felt she was “pretty open and honest about everything,” but kept quiet on details that may have been “embarrassing” for those close to her.
She revealed her motivation behind this story: “I want to share my experience, so hopefully, other people can heal from this too.”
Selling Sunset’s Mary has dark days
Mary believes that “the more we talk about things,” the more “educated” and “healed” people will be.
She told Page Six: “I’m not the only one, and so the more I can be open about stuff, maybe it’ll help save somebody from putting them in that situation.”
Her book seems very aptly named as it is representative of her bubbly personality which many fans have come to love through the show. Commonly acting as “peacekeeper” on the show, the hosts note how they “would almost never know” about her dark past.
They want to know her secret to positivity. Mary shared it’s not all that we see on screen: “I have my days, I’m not immune to it. I have, like, something happens and I cry and stay under the covers for a day.”
She revealed how she pulls it back after one of these dark days: “You got to get out, you got to keep going.”
“Gratitude” is something that plays a strong role in Bonnet’s ability to keep fighting.
She feels “blessed” to have “this platform to be able to get through it” and with the fact she is able to “share that story” in the hopes of helping someone like her.
