How A Sugarcane Seller Drowned In A River In Jigawa River

The tragic incident occurred on Saturday, 7th day of September, 2024 at about 0945hrs when Sulaiman attempted to take his bath along the river bank.

Sulaiman Potiskum, a 55-year-old Nigerian sugarcane seller, has died.

The man lost his life in a river at Gada, Bakin Kogi, in Hadejia Local Government Area of Jigawa State. 

The spokesperson of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NYSC) Jigawa State Command, ASC Badruddeen Tijjani Mahmud, said the tragic incident occurred on Saturday, 7th day of September, 2024 at about 0945hrs when Sulaiman attempted to take his bath along the river bank, but was overwhelmed by the flooded water.

“Despite the swift response from the NSCDC search and rescue operatives and local divers, his life could not be saved as he was pronounced dead upon reaching the General Hospital Hadejia by a medical practitioner,” the PPRO said. 

“His body was handed over to his relatives for proper burial according to Islamic injunctions. 

“It may be recalled that recently, drowning incident is on the increase and as such the Command warned against swimming in flooded rivers and ponds as they constitute threats to lives.”
