Gombe varsity ASUU declares indefinite strike  over welfare issues

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) of Gombe State University (GSU) Wednesday declared an indefinite internal strike, citing longstanding unresolved welfare issues.

The decision, announced Wednesday by ASUU branch chairman Dr. Suleiman Salihu Jauro, marks the first internal strike since the university’s establishment 20 years ago.

Dr. Jauro  stated that the strike action was necessary to address the poor teaching and learning conditions at GSU. Despite years of pursuing peaceful negotiations, no significant progress had been made.

He specifically pointed to the state government’s failure to implement key components of the 2021 Memorandum of Action (MoA), including the non-payment of accumulated Earned Academic Allowances (EAA) and the promised N50 million annual funding for the university.

“Almost four years after signing the agreement, not a single kobo has been paid,” Dr. Jauro lamented.

He added that the university staff endured over five years without the EAA, further straining their ability to handle excessive workloads in inadequate working conditions.
