The North East Development Commission (NEDC) has begun evacuating of 15 kilometers drainage channels in Yobe to mitigate flooding caused by global warming.
Speaking while inspecting the clearance activities going on in several drainage channels across damaturu,Yobe state coordinator,NEDC, Prof.Ali Ibrahim Abbas said, they want to see the drainage evacuation exercise and ensure the project is being conducted successfully.
Prof.Abbas stated that NEDC is trying to support Yobe state Government as it has done a lot in terms of drainage evacuation in the state.
He revealed that NEDC has observed that rainfall this year is highly unpredictable .
“In Damaturu we are covering Gujba road from Samaila Nguru axis move in to Nyanya, Malari Communities and link up with Damaturu,-maiduguri, Damaturu , Postikum bye-pass so that all this places will be cleared.
“We are also working in Ajari area from Ajiko point to family and support area.we are planning to cover 15 kilometers meters in Damaturu,and this goes across all the major town of Nguru,Gashua,Potiskum, damagum,Buni-Yadi,Geidam among several others,” he said.
He commended government for their support.
“Yobe state government has done a lot,our own is to support and complement the effort of Yobe state government”.
On his part, the Yobe state Commissioner of environment, Sidi Yakubu Karasuwa, commended NEDC for joining the state to eventuate culvert and drainages in the state.
Represented by the permanent secretary of the ministry,Tunga Betara Bularafa, he charged on the residents of the state to desist from dumping of refuses in the drainages to avoid flood disaster.
