Italian tennis ace Jannik Sinner, capitalizing on his dream run in the 2024 season, won the title at the US Open. The 23-year-old defeated Taylor Fritz in straight sets to land his first title at the Flushing Meadows on Sunday. Having clinched his maiden Grand Slam title at the Australian Open earlier this year, Sinner also became the first man in 50 years to win his first two Grand Slam titles in the same season.
With Sinner scripting history for himself despite coming into the tournament with the baggage of the doping controversy, the Italian was hailed for his mindset by his coach Darren Cahill. He claimed that Sinner is someone who was born with that kind of mindset.
This morning we were talking to Andre Agassi in the locker room. He was talking about his game, and his mentality, and his composure also in the big moments. Even when he was tested in that third set, I still felt like he felt like he could get back into it and turn it around which he was able to do.Darren Cahill said to ESPN. (H/T: ATP Tour)
While Sinner might have been born with the mindset of the champion, Cahill was an important individual who was able to capitalize on it.
So, he’s got this champion mindset that I think a lot of players don’t have. Certain players do have it for sure. But I believe he was born with it and he loves those situations and those moments.Darren Cahill added
The Italian has flourished under the Australian’s guidance, clinching his maiden Grand Slam title, then rising to No.1 in the rankings, and ending up with a title at the year’s last Grand Slam tournament.
Jannik Sinner was more confident in New York, feels Darren Cahill
Jannik Sinner‘s coach also talked about the difference between the Italian’s run at the Australian Open and that of the US Open. Darren Cahill felt that Sinner was more confident in New York. He opined that since the Australian Open was his first Grand Slam final, there were nerves, but once Sinner got over them, he was ready.
He was ready today. There was a difference between Australia and here. I think in Australia when you’re going for your first, those nerves, it was the first major final that he’d ever been in. There were more nerves.Darren Cahill pointed out difference between Australian Open and US Open for Jannik Sinner.
Comparing Sinner’s outings at the Australian Open and US Open, there were some notable differences. The first major difference was the opponents against whom the Italian fought before laying a hand on the title. While Sinner beat Novak Djokovic in the Australian Open semifinal, he came back from 0-2 against Daniil Medvedev to win the title in Melbourne.
And maybe even some more expectations as well, because he had beaten Medvedev a few times. And to get over that hump and that hurdle. I think it gives you incredible confidence that no matter what, you are going to be able to handle situations.Darren Cahill added
In New York, Sinner played against Briton Jack Draper in the semifinal and Taylor Fritz in the final, both of whom were playing their first-ever stages of Grand Slam events. It is the two Grand Slam titles in one season that remain the highlight for Sinner.
In case you missed it!
