panel of the Paul Kruger Statue on the Church Square in Pretoria had been stolen and recovered.
According to spokesperson Lindela Mashigo, the incident was recorded as recovered on July 18, 2023, and the panel was found by the SA police officers in the City of Tshwane after a tip-off was received.
“The panel was taken to the Central Police Station for storage by the officers.”
He said the panel was eventually handed over to the City of Tshwane upon establishing that it belonged to the municipality.
“It must be noted that the panel had suffered some damages and is safely stored in the city store, waiting to be assessed and repaired/ restored before reinstallation and safely incorporated to the monument.”
Mashigo said he did not have details on the arrests, investigation and/ or status of the case.

“The intention currently is to try to secure funding to repair the damages and return the panel back to its original space.”
He furthermore said there are security measures to be put up as part of the precinct safeguard to deter further loss to public monument.
“Multi-stakeholder teams of various departments and private businesses would be incorporated into the improvement plan.”
