A member of the House of Representative, Clement Jimbo, representing Abak/Etim Ekpo/Ika Federal Constituency, has called on Nigerians to remain hopeful and trust in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s ability to deliver on his Renewed Hope Agenda.
Speaking on Channels TV’s Sunrise Daily on Friday, Jimbo reassured Nigerians that the current economic turbulence, exacerbated by fuel subsidy removal, would soon be resolved through strategic measures initiated by the president.
Commenting on the protests, he said, “The #EndSARS protest had a specific focus on police brutality and achieved its purpose. However, the #EndBadGovernance protest is more open-ended, making it challenging to address directly.”
Drawing an analogy, the 41-year-old lawmaker said, “I liken the current scenario to a man who got married, lost his wife, or separated, and had to bring in another wife. The new person needs to understand the household dynamics, the children, and how things were done. It’s the same with the government.”
Jimbo, who is the deputy chairman of the House Committee on National Planning and Economic Development, said the Tinubu administration “is the first in Nigeria’s history to operate without fuel subsidies.”
Responding to a question, Jimbo argued that no policy in President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda could be labelled as “bad governance.”
“Reports indicated that fuel subsidies primarily benefitted a select few, while the country borrowed money to pay for them; which is likened to a father borrowing heavily to give his children a luxury lifestyle without revealing the mounting debts,” he said.
Jimbo, therefore, urged the citizens to be “patient, remain patriotic, and continue to love one another,” stressing that the president’s Renewed Hope Agenda “will soon lead to economic stability and growth.”
