Ogun: Adegoke wins 6th Olusegun Obasanjo National Squash Championship

Onoopemipo Adegoke, the Nigeria number one squash player has won the men’s 6th National Squash Championship held at the Olusegun Obasanjo Squash Court, Abeokuta. 

Adegoke, who is currently based in the United States defeating his number two rival, Olufunmilayo Gabriel by 3 games to 1.

In the female category, Addulazeez Rofiat from Kwara state, defeated Busayo Olatunji of the NSCDC by 3-1, while Aishat Abdulraheem won against Zainab Ishola in the U-16 girls division. 

For the U16 boys, Mathew Yusuf of Lagos State won 3-0 against Shuib Giwa of Kwara State. 

The competition which was sponsored by Seagle Property Development Coy, in partnership with the Ogun State Squash Association and the Nigeria Squash Federation featured 172 players from across the country.

Speaking with newsmen, the Chairman of the Ogun State Squash Association, Hon. Akeem Akimgbade, disclosed that Squash is a game that encourages fitness.

He added that the majority of people playing squash are trained in Ogun state, calling on the government to put more into squash games.

The sponsor of the tournament, Otunba Yemi Lawal, stated that it is pertinent to catch the young ones and nurture them in the limelight in squash games. 

Lawal also encouraged the government to leverage squash games in preparation for the next Olympic games. 

“We intend to encourage and support the program and ensure that Nigerians participate in the coming Olympics and giving them scholarships. 

“This is also part of giving back to the society, as part of our CSR”, he said
