YouTube’s dominant creator, MrBeast, has been the subject of intense scrutiny over a range of issues this summer — and MrBeast’s ex-girlfriend Maddy Spidell has waded into what is becoming a sprawling range of controversies.

MrBeast’s ex-girlfriend was not initially party to any of the initial accusations leveled at the YouTuber, whose real name is Jimmy Donaldson.

As for the “range of controversies” mentioned above, they were complex.

In late July, a third party leveled allegations against MrBeast’s now-former collaborator and close friend, Ava Kris Tyson, mainly concerning DMs between Ava (then 20) and a young fan of MrBeast (@LavaGS, 13 at the time in question).

MrBeast himself tweeted pretty soon after the rumors spread, pledging an external investigation into the claims.

As soon as allegations involving Ava Tyson spread, the fan was identified as @LavaGS, who immediately stepped forward to deny anything inappropriate had occurred, seemingly casting doubt on the claims.

But less than a week later, @LavaGS changed his mind after reviewing chat logs, and agreed an investigation was appropriate:

“I still do not remember the NSFW channel stuff, but it’s been proven to have existed from logs … I still believe the other allegations deserve to be investigated. I’m not defending the actions of Ava.”

That MrBeast controversy didn’t occur in a vacuum, though.

It came on the heels of a similar matter involving smaller but prominent YouTuber Cody Ko, during a time when drama channels were on high alert, churning out non-stop videos.

Clout chasing takes many forms, and it was obvious that smaller creators were competing to try to outdo one another with escalating MrBeast rumors:

MrBeast’s reign at the top of YouTube’s charts for what feels like an eon didn’t help the situation, as videos promising “drama” were extremely lucrative, and as the screenshot shows, were a guaranteed way to get millions of views.

Other allegations about MrBeast’s operation followed, including a separate set of claims about a former employee of the channel known as “Delaware.”

As all of those allegations circulated, MrBeast’s ex-girlfriend Maddy Spidell weighed in on Instagram, albeit nebulously.

Although sets of rumors about MrBeast and his crew circulated throughout July and August, most centered around Jimmy’s friends and employees.

A few threads of rumor directly targeted Jimmy, including a very persistent and sincere assertion that he had allegedly committed “war crimes” or violated the Geneva Convention.

Unlike Cody Ko or Jimmy’s collaborators and friends, the rumors rarely pertained to MrBeast’s interpersonal relationships or behavior.

But on August 8, Maddy Spidell – MrBeast’s ex-girlfriend – appeared to lob some vague accusations at Jimmy, first via Instagram Stories.

Maddy didn’t mention MrBeast by name, but their relationship remains well documented, and she prefaced her Story as follows:

@youtube you need to reevaluate who you’re putting on the trending page

On a separate pane, Maddy typed out a longer statement:

Maddy Spidell is now 24, and her Instagram statement began:

“i’ve spent years … YEARS being quiet, never acknowledging that time in my life, just quietly cheering on those who i saw mistreated.

“i don’t want drama, i don’t want anything, i just want to speak up for my 19 year old self.

“19-21 are formative years, and as a young woman it impacted the way i saw myself, the way i interpreted my future and how i trusted men.

“there was no user manual, there was no instructions on how to deal with gaining a following quickly, no cheat sheet on dating someone famous, i did the best i could, but i was not okay.”

That initial section didn’t really say anything specific about MrBeast as a person, and it largely focused on the difficulty of dating someone notable at a young age.

Maddy’s MrBeast statement continued in the same vein:

“months of therapy, so many journal entries, long talks with my mom, why do i still feel like it was all for nothing?

“i believe i should be used as a cautionary tale. if something [seems] too good to be true, it probably is. how he treats other women will ultimately be how he treats you. you are smart, beautiful and capable of a career, life and relationship that you are proud of.

“i do not aim to take anyone down, just simply and explicitly tell you that there are scary people out there. people will hurt you, use you, spit you out and then tell you it’s your fault.

“it’s all of our jobs to protect our friends, our moms, our wives, our sisters, our daughters, OURSELVES from people like that. if you see something not cool, speak up.”

In addition to Instagram Stories, Maddy – who has since set her posts on Twitter/X to private – tweeted in part:

Three years away from that weirdo, my skin is clear, my relationships and friendships are flourishing, I’m frolicking in a field[.]

In the tweet, Maddy acknowledged her statement was “vague,” and she has not publicly acknowledged MrBeast since.
