A Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Afam Osigwe, has officially been sworn in as the 32nd President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).
TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that Osigwe took over from Yakubu Maikyau, SAN, whose term concluded on Thursday.
In his inaugural address, Osigwe who will oversee the association in a two-year term pledged to hold both federal and state governments accountable, particularly on issues related to justice, equity, and the rule of law.
Osigwe who polled over 20,435 votes to emerge the new president emphasized the critical role the legal profession plays in society after which reaffirmed the NBA’s commitment to ensuring that government policies align with the needs and aspirations of the Nigerian people.
Osigwe expressed gratitude to his fellow candidates, Chairman of the NBA institute of continuing legal education board Tobenna Erojikwe and Chukwuka Ikwazom, SAN, for maintaining a high level of decorum throughout the election process.
He extended an invitation for them to work with him in advancing the goals of the NBA.
He promised to lead an inclusive association that not only unites its members but also drives the NBA forward.
Osigwe highlighted his commitment to prioritizing the welfare and professional development of lawyers, stating, “We will do our utmost best to ensure that we fulfil our promises to engender an NBA that places lawyers at the centre of its programmes.”
The inauguration of the new NBA President and National Officers marks the conclusion of the association’s week-long annual general conference, which began on August 23rd.
