Emma Raducanu won’t be taking part in the Canadian Open, a WTA Masters 1000 event, as she won’t get direct entry into the main draw due to her rankings. She was ranked World No. 93 on July 22, the cutoff date for the tournament.
The Brit wasn’t given the wild card as four of them were handed to Naomi Osaka, Bianca Andreescu, Rebecca Marino, and Marina Stakusic. The 21-year-old had the chance to feature in the main draw by playing the qualifying rounds, but she deemed it best to not take part in the event. Instead, Raducanu’s next target is likely to be the Cincinnati Open.
Raducanu, who skipped the Paris Olympics to prioritize her health and improve her rankings, played in the Citi Open. The World No. 89 was enjoying a decent run until Spain’s Paula Badosa knocked her out 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 in the quarterfinals.
I started the grass season ranked outside of 200 and finished it in the top 100. For me that was relatively successful. It guaranteed me a spot hopefully in the main draw of the US [Open]. That was a big thing for me. I wanted to make sure I got into the Slams.Emma Raducanu told the press (via Tennis365)
The result of the Citi Open will help her rankings, which in turn will allow her to appear in the main draw of the US Open, which she won in 2021 as a qualifier.
Emma Raducanu hoping to get a wild card to play in the Cincinnati Open
Although the recent tournaments will help Emma Raducanu get a place in the main draw list of the US Open, she will depend on the wild card if she wants to play the Cincinnati Open. The players who will get direct entry into the event will be ranked World No. 43 and above.
While many players skip the event before a Grand Slam tournament, Raducanu, who played the Eastbourne International before Wimbledon, may decide to play in Cincinnati. The Cincinnati Open starts on August 13 and will end on August 19, while the US Open gets underway on August 19.
Apart from the Olympics, the former World No.10 also skipped the French Open to focus on her matches on the grass courts before Wimbledon. She reached the fourth round at the SW19 where New Zealand’s Lulu Sun eliminated her in three sets.
