Dawn Hollyoak dies aged 61

Dawn Hollyoak, a 2022 contestant, has died at the age of 61. Before her death, she worked as a designer and maker of couture cakes, and also led baking classes and sugar crafting workshops.

A statement on July 5 wrote, “Not only a wonderfully talented baker but first and foremost an amazing mother, grandmother, wife and friend. Dawn passed away peacefully surrounded by her family.”

It continued, “We will miss her forever, but promise to continue her baking legacy!” No cause of death was given, but many tributes from fans across the nation have penned memories of Hollyoak.

She applied for GBBO 10 times

After Hollyoak was eliminated from the show, she revealed she’d applied several times. “10 applications and then finally I got the call I’d dreamt about. I arrived at the tent feeling a bit scared (terrified),” she wrote.

The much-loved baker added, “Everyone knew who I was, really strange, I’m just Dawn, Mrs Ordinary Mum/Granny! What a great time (that no one ever sees) so welcoming and wonderful.”

“They even check how you take your coffee before you arrive,” Hollyoak penned. However, during her time on Bake Off, she was “fuming” when she and her co-stars weren’t given a lemon meringue recipe to follow.

‘Ordinary grandma’ loved by the nation

Although Dawn described herself as an “ordinary grandma,” her fans and loved ones found her sensational. Tributes have poured in for the baker – including from GBBO judge, Paul Hollywood.

He wrote, “I’m so sorry to hear that, send my love to the family ???? a lovely lady.” Janusz Domagała, who also competed in the 2022 series, shared: “All my love is with you.”

Another co-star, Maxy Maligisa, said: ‘Dawn will be missed so much ???????????????? our memories together are memories I’ll cherish forever ????️❤️ xx.’
