The couple became parents with the birth of their son Jaeyul in 2018 and twin girls Ahyoon and Arin in early 2020. When they initially met in 2017, their relationship caused a stir because they were both K-pop idols who were prohibited from dating by their respective record labels in order to maintain the illusion that they were “available.” Yulhee was the youngest member of the girl group Laboum and Minhwan was the drummer for the Korean pop-rock band F.T. Island. Yulhee left Laboum soon after the news leaked, and the couple declared that they were expecting a kid and planning to marry.

Choi Minhwan And Yulhee Have Ended Their Marriage And He Has Primary Custody Of Their Children, Shocking The K-pop Industry
After a span of five years and the addition of three children, one of the most controversial couples in the K-pop scene has decided to end their relationship. Choi Minhwan, 31, and Yulhee, who celebrated her 26th birthday last week, officially announced their divorce on Monday. The couple revealed that Minhwan will be granted custody of their three children. At the time of their union, Minhwan served as the drummer for the Korean pop-rock band F.T. Island, while Yulhee was the youngest member of the girl group Laboum.
Yulhee departed from Laboum shortly after news of their relationship surfaced, and the couple shared the news of expecting a child and their intention to marry. Their son, Jaeyul, was born in May 2018, and they tied the knot in October of the same year. The following year, they were blessed with twin girls. Despite their youth, controversies surrounding their relationship, and their status as K-pop idols, the couple remained in the public eye by participating in various Korean talk shows and the popular reality series Mr. House Husband. These shows often delved into the couple’s personal struggles and highlighted the challenges in their marriage.

In an episode of Mr. House Husband, Yulhee’s father disclosed that he learned about his daughter’s pregnancy during their first meeting with Minhwan. The former couple also openly discussed their lavish spending habits, such as allocating 8 million KRW (approximately AUD$9,249) monthly for their children’s education.
Despite their two youngest being just three years old and their eldest only five at the time, their financial disclosure brought to light their disagreements. Minhwan objected to the extravagant spending, asserting that it was excessive, especially for the children. Following the birth of their twins, Minhwan opted for a vasectomy, but Yulhee expressed her desire for a fourth child soon after. On Monday, the couple announced their separation and impending divorce.
Yulhee shared on Instagram, “Our journey as a couple concludes here, but we remain committed as the parents of our children. Both of us, to the best of our abilities, are actively involved and in constant communication with the children.” She continued, “After careful consideration, we have decided that the father will take care of the three children. We believe it is best for the children to remain in the familiar environment they are accustomed to, minimizing practical challenges and psychological concerns. I am also devoted to spending quality time with my children to ensure they do not feel the absence of their mother.”
This decision has sparked division among Koreans, with some blaming the young mother and others offering their support.
