A security officer was fatally wounded during an attempted hijacking and robbery on Monday night.
According to local ward councillor Siobhan Muller, the officer was shot in Menlo Park on The Rand Street next to a security estate in Pretoria east in what appeared to be an attempted hijacking and robbery just before 19:00.
The victim was on guard duty.
“He unfortunately passed away on the scene,” Muller said.
She added that this was a tragedy and shows the thug mentality of some criminals.
“It is sad to see that criminals have the audacity to even come in security areas and randomly shoot and kill people.”
Muller urged all residents to be cautious.
“Living in a security complex doesn’t mean you should relax, criminals are everywhere and they are opportunistic,” Muller said.
She said people should report any suspicious activity to their security companies immediately.
Police could not be reached for comment.
