Centurion’s singing optometrist crowned Mr South Africa

Centurion has produced another champion, this time with Tiaan Massyn (30) crowned Mr South Africa 2023 at the grand finals of the competition at Vodacom Dome on Sunday, November 11.

The multitalented Eldoraigne resident is well-known in the area, both for his musical talents and his work as a successful optometrist.

“After months of hard work, the past week was filled with long days and late nights and a lot of stress but also a healthy anticipation for the big night,” Massyn told Rekord.

“In this time, amazing friendships were formed and a real brotherhood created.”

Massyn said he planned to use the title to tackle a cause close to his heart, accessible primary eye care and mental health awareness, especially for men.

“I aim to collaborate with organisations, initiate impactful projects and inspire positive change across South Africa,” he said.

Massyn said the Centurion community showed him overwhelming support, “my patients seem to love having a singing optometrist”.

“They say ‘it takes a village’, and in my case, this was very true. I always say I was raised in a vast community as due to circumstances we moved around a lot,” he said.

He dedicated the award to his parents.

“I would like to honour my parents and dedicate this award to both of them. Life hasn’t been easy but their love and dedication towards my sisters and I always came first.

“As Mr. South Africa, I want to inspire others to embrace their potential, overcome challenges, and pursue their passions with unwavering determination.”

He said that he wanted to set an example for others to believe in themselves and go for their dreams despite fear.

“Let’s create a world in which fear is a stepping stone, not a barrier.”

Massyn’s alma mater, Hoërskool Eldoraigne joined the rest of Centurion in congratulating another win for the community.

“The Eldos are incredibly proud of you and wish you all the best for the year in which you will fulfil your role. You are an inspiration to us all.

“The Eldos are bursting with pride because both the Mr and Miss South Africa 2023 titles now belong to ex-Eldos.”
