On Saturday, actor Kamal Haasan shared his thoughts on The Kerala Story, a contentious yet popular movie directed by Sudipto Sen. The popular Tamil actor declared that he opposes “propagandist films.” Sen responded to Haasan’s criticism of his movie by claiming that those labeling it “propaganda” haven’t seen it themselves and are thus engaging in their own kind of it.
The Kerala Story, which has overtaken Pathaan as the second-highest-grossing movie of the year, opened in theaters on May 5. The Adah Sharma starrer received criticism even before it was released for its assertion that over 30,000 women from the state of Kerala had been radicalized by Islamic radicals.

Sudipto Sen admitted to Hindustan Times that he no longer bothers to respond to criticism of his movie. He also criticized people for only seeing black or white and ignoring the gray areas of life.
“Those who didn’t see it are criticizing it,” he said. In the same way, it wasn’t made available in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal. Since these guys haven’t seen the movie, they believe it to be propaganda. In our nation, there are some rather dumb stereotypes. They don’t understand that life can also be gray; life must be either black or white.
“A person is engaging in propaganda by calling it a propaganda film without having seen it and forming an opinion,” the director continued. Hypocrisy is the only other word that would be appropriate.
