Sophomore Josele Ballester was one of six golfers in a 45-player field to shoot even-par or better and sits Sun Devil Men’s Golf is fourth after two days of the Calusa Cup.
The Sun Devils maintained a fourth-place team placement for the second consecutive day after a 7-over 295 (72-73-75-75). Two of five Sun Devils are in the top 10. ASU is two strokes back of third-place Vanderbilt with one day remaining.
“The guys are determined,” associate head coach Thomas Sutton said. “I wouldn’t be surprised if we make a run at it tomorrow.”
Ballester’s eight birdies are tied for the second-most birdies in the field through two rounds. He is 1-over 145 and tied for fifth.
“Josele is a world-class player,” head coach Matt Thurmond said. “We know he’s going to be there for us and this week he seems to be hitting his stride. His mind is sharp and his game is tuning up. I expect him to have a great finish to the season.”
Ryggs Johnston has been able to capitalize on the par 5’s with the second-best mark at -4. He is a combined -7 on holes 13-18 over the first two days.
The Sun Devils are 11 shots off the lead with one day remaining. Pairings and tee times for Monday will be announced late Sunday night, with a non-shotgun start for the event. Live stats will be provided on Golfstat.com.
