Over 200m of stolen cables were recovered and two suspected cable thieves were arrested in Menlo Park by a private security company on Tuesday evening.
“A 100m cable was recovered but the suspects initially evaded arrest,” said CSI Security CEO Dana Bloem.
“However, a WhatsApp message was received where a resident reported seeing two cable thieves fleeing on foot.
“CSI armed tactical teams responded immediately,” he said.
“Upon arrival, we made contact with a resident and did an area sweep while other teams patrolled the perimeter area.
“Another patrolling tactical team came across two persons matching the description of the cable thieves acting suspiciously.
“They were immediately detained and handed over to the police,” Bloem said.
Bloem said cable thieves target areas during load-shedding.
“Whenever the electricity goes off, it allows the culprit to climb and cut the cables.”
He said the community should use cost-effective ways to deal with cable theft.
“If the residents can grease the poles, this would help to reduce cable theft.
“Using cameras monitored by artificial intelligence will also make it difficult for thieves to steal the cables.”
He urged residents to report any suspicious activity on the CPF groups or to directly contact the CSI control room.
