New York City FC Monday announced that is has loaned forward Thiago Andrade to Brazilian side Clube Athletico Paranaense through Dec. 31.

The deal includes an option to become permanent, which is automatically exercised if certain performance criteria are met.

“We believe this is a great opportunity for Thiago to return home where he will be able to continue his career development,” sporting director David Lee said in a statement. “We would like to thank Thiago for his contributions in New York and look forward to following his progress throughout the season. We wish him all the best with his new team.”

Joining the team in April 2021, the Brazilian featured in 71 matches, scoring 12 goals and assisting five times across all competitions (MLS, Concacaf Champions League, US Open Cup and the 2022 Campeones Cup).

He probably will be best remembered for his iconic solo goal in 2021, against D.C. United, running the length of the pitch to give NYCFC the win in the dying seconds of the match.

“I want to thank everyone at New York City Football Club for giving me the opportunity to come to this great city and helping me develop into the player I am today,” Thiago Andrade said in a statement. “It’s been an honor to represent this Club, winning championships for this City is something that I will always remember.

“I look forward to returning to Brazil and the prospect of this new challenge. I would like to wish everyone at NYCFC the best for the rest of the season.”
