Several shots were fired, but luckily no one was injured when an armed gang targeted a cash-in-transit (CIT) vehicle on Tuesday afternoon in Atteridgeville, west of Pretoria.
The vehicle was also bombed during the robbery in Umkhombe Street at around 17:30, according to police.
“Two security officers were driving a G4S cash van and were busy collecting and dropping off money when a GWM smashed into them,” said national police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe.
“A group of about 10 suspects jumped out of a range of vehicles they were travelling in, including the GWM, a silver Mercedes Benz, a white Ford Ranger and a silver Datsun.”
She said that the suspects held the security guards at gunpoint and ordered them to exit the vehicle.
“They then bombed the cash van and took the money and fled,” she said.
Mathe said a manhunt has been launched to find the robbers.
CIT heists have increased by 19% during the first two months of 2023 compared to the same period last year, according to the Cash-In-Transit Association of SA (Citasa) reported.
Gauteng alone was the scene of 43% of CIT robberies.
