Three men appeared in the Pretoria magistrate’s court on Monday, March 13 on charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and planning to rob a store.
Security company ADT spokesperson Leon Muller said the three were arrested at East Park centre in Baviaanspoort, East Lynne, recently.
He said he received a tip-off about the planned robbery and immediately put his officers on a high alert.
“All security members in the area were notified that the would-be robbers were travelling from Mamelodi in a Toyota Quantum minibus while being pursued by the police,” said Muller adding that the men were intercepted by the police.
He said an unlicensed revolver with six bullets was found in their possession and they confessed they were on their way to rob a store at the shopping centre.
He said they were immediately taken to Villieria police station and charged with possession of unlicensed firearm as well as conspiracy to commit a robbery.
Muller said arrest once again highlights the importance of all stakeholders – police, tracking companies and security companies – working together to fight crime.
“We will continue to work together to send a strong message that lawlessness will not be tolerated,” said Muller.
Provincial police spokesperson Captain Mavela Masondo confirmed the men were charged with conspiracy to commit a crime and possession of an unlicensed firearm.
