Several suspects nabbed in Tshwane for suspected theft of cables

The Tshwane metro police cable theft unit arrested seven suspects during the course of the week for the possession of suspected stolen copper cables in various areas in Pretoria.

Working on a tip-off received, the cable theft unit conducted an operation at a scrapyard in the Onderstepoort area that is suspected to be dealing with stolen copper.

Tshwane metro police spokesperson, Isaac Mahamba, said the scrapyard was identified and members conducted a search and the suspected stolen copper was found.

“The owner (45) was arrested for the possession of suspected stolen copper. During the arrest the suspect tried to bribe the officers with R6000, and a bribery charge was added.

“The estimated street value of the copper has still to be determined.”

In a separate incident members of the cable theft unit arrested six suspects for the possession of suspected stolen copper cables.

“The unit received information that three vehicles would be transporting suspected stolen cables to SA Metal in Hercules.

“Three vehicles were spotted on separate occasions and searched

Six suspects were apprehended by the unit,” said Mahamba.

In line with the department’s promise to serve and protect Region 1, sector 2 members held a joint clean-up operation with waste management in the Akasia area whereby about 100 illegal advertising boards were removed, persons were searched for possible illegal weapons and fines were issued for various traffic offenses.

“We thank members of the community for continuing to work with the police by giving us information and we guarantee that we will always protect their identity,” he said.
