Residents of Section D3 in Mamelodi West are fed up with the unbearable stench from an illegal dumpsite near a local car wash.
On Sunday, the residents together with local ward 6 councillor Shiba Madonsela held a clean-up campaign to remove the dirt.
Councillor Shiba Madonsela said the open veld has been identified as a hotspot for illegal dumping.
He said he had received several complaints from residents of Mananya, Motau and Kgomo streets in Section D3 about the unbearable stench.
“Residents are unable to open windows to enjoy fresh air because of the flies and mosquitos,” said Madonsela.
He said the illegal dumpsite has put the health of nearby residents at high risk of disease because of the rat infestation in the area.
Madonsela said residents are trapped in their own houses.
“Residents complaint they are always locked inside their homes fearing for their health.
“Some have already started complaining about their lung infections,” he said.
He further said the whole area is covered in litter and the City of Tshwane is failing locals.
“We have cleaned the area, placed tyres to prevent further illegal dumping,” he added.
“We have been complaining to Tshwane metro for a long time but nothing has been done to stop littering and it has failed to get the rubble removed.”
He further said the community members should safeguard the environment and pleaded with them to stop littering.
