After a modest start to the so-called national shutdown in Pretoria earlier this morning, EFF leader Julius Malema gathered over a thousand supporters to march from Church Square to the Union Buildings.
Malema led the crowd, escorted by armed police.
Shortly before the march started, Malema briefly addressed the crowds at Church Square, saying Monday’s shutdown was the “most successful” in recent history.

Malema accused the current Minister of Transport, Sindisiwe Chikunga, of sabotaging the march.
“A corrupt […] Chikunga used the tender system to threaten bus companies for them to cancel all buses that the EFF booked ahead of the national shutdown.
“Chikunga made sure that buses, which were supposed to transport fighters bail on us, but we are here gathered and shame on her.”

Malema said South Africa is the rape capital of the world and gender-based violence has been normalised because the justice system was failing victims.
He called on more members to join the peaceful march.
“Make your voice heard and come out in your numbers to join this principled call to rescue our nation from disaster.”
So far the march is peaceful with no reports of public violence or looting.
