GREENVILLE, SC — Not many forecasters surrounding women’s college basketball have predicted an LSU women’s basketball matchup against Miami in the Elite Eight’s Greenville 2 Regional.

But there was a certain “madness” at March Madness and both the third-placed Tigers (31-2) and ninth-placed Hurricanes (22-12) have defied odds in the NCAA tournament for a shot at making the Final Four.

Kim Mulkey has repeatedly said that LSU “shouldn’t be here” in its second season at Baton Rouge. But the Tigers have a chance to officially announce their return to the sport’s top flight.

LSU women’s basketball needs to solve Miami’s press

On paper, it looked like Villanova and the nation’s top scorer Maddy Siegrest would be a poor duel for the Canes.

But Katie Meier’s side ramped up their defense – which is frenetic, direct pressure – and it caused all sorts of problems for fourth-seeded Villanova in the 70-65 Sweet 16 win, as well as No. 1-seeded Indiana last weekend .

This season, LSU often struggled with press defenses. Senior point guard Alexis Morris, along with Keteri Poole and Last-Tear Poa, will need near-perfect ball handling for LSU to win.

LSU sophomore star forward Angel Reese and senior LaDazhia Williams, who picked up 24 points in LSU’s win over Utah on Friday, need to attack the glass as efficiently as possible. You’ll have to deal with bodies coming from all directions, so positioning yourself inside will be crucial.
