The victim was afraid that Handy would harm her. According to the victim, her four minor children under the age of 12 were all in the home during the incident. The victim claimed her children tried to escape from the house through a bedroom window but were unsuccessful.

Handy was noncompliant with officers working at the crime scene, refusing their orders and negotiating to leave the residence for an hour, prompting the summoning of the Monroe Police Department SWAT team.

SWAT arrived at the scene to continue assisting in negotiations with Handy, at which he finally surrendered at around 5:38 p.m. Handy was arrested and a search warrant obtained for the house where a 9mm Taurus pistol was found.

Further investigation determined Handy to be a convicted felon barred from possessing a firearm. In addition, authorities found that the suspect also had an active protection order against him.

After Miranda, Handy continuously denied that the incident happened. The suspect and victim share a one-year-old daughter, whom they had during their two-year relationship.

Handy received the following charges:

  • Violation of Probation
  • Possession of a firearm or carrying a concealed weapon by a person convicted of certain crimes
  • Violation of the protective order
  • Domestic violence, serious bodily harm
  • Five counts of false detention, perpetrator armed with dangerous weapon
