GREENVILLE, SC – There might not be more well-known Louisiana natives than Kim Mulkey and rap star Lil Wayne.
Known for smash hits like ‘Lollipop’, ‘Go DJ’ and ‘Fireman’, the New Orleans rapper is an integral part of the state’s music scene. And after LSU women’s basketball’s Sweet 16 win over Utah, an exciting 66-63 nail biter, he called out forward Angel Reese and the Tigers and tweeted, “Angel (expletive) Reese!!!!!!!! home team.”
But some might say Lil Wayne was straddling the fence when he made a FaceTime call with Miami’s team after it knocked off Villanova to stage a showdown with LSU in the Elite Eight. The Greenville 2 Regional Finals of the NCAA Tournament will be held Sunday at 6 p.m. (ESPN).

“I’m with him because he’s from NOLA and he called her before he called us,” Reese said in the team’s press conference on Saturday. “Luckily he tweeted it last night. Hope he comes to the game.
“But seeing women’s basketball grow like this has been amazing all year. If you’ve seen all the different types of celebrities and NBA players and people who have reached out to us and shown their support. I think Magic Johnson tweeted me last night. Just seeing that makes me happy because I can grow women’s basketball. So, Lil Tunechi, you better come by tomorrow.”
Mulkey has developed a friendship of sorts with Lil Wayne since returning to her home state.
And it appears that Lil Wayne has a connection to the Hurricanes’ Cavinder twins, Haley and Hanna, who are huge social media personalities and some of the top earners of Name, Image, Likeness deals, along with Reese, in the NCAA.

“I think he likes women’s basketball and that’s a win for women’s basketball,” Haley Cavinder said Saturday. “Hopefully he comes to the game if he likes Angel Reese and our team. Lil Wayne, when you see this…”
Still, Mulkey believes the Louisiana connection would be enough to cheer for the Tigers or his “home team,” he tweeted.
“Well, I don’t know the Miami connection, other than that there’s a pretty big rap scene there. Maybe it is. I would think he’s from Louisiana,” Mulkey said. “I don’t know him well enough to speak for him, but as far as I know he’s from Louisiana. I don’t think we have to worry about Lil Wayne (drawing for Miami).
“But it’s funny you saying that, because after the game, I could hear[LSU freshman Flau’jae Johnson]say, ‘Oh no, I know he didn’t, Miami. We’d better hear from him.’ I wonder, ‘Who is she talking about?’ They said Lil Wayne, and I said, ‘Oh, OK.’ They keep up with things.”
As Reese asked him to “pull up” to Sunday’s game, the wait continues as to which team Lil Wayne will declare allegiance to for the Elite Eight. But Johnson, herself a signed rapper to Jay-Z’s Roc Nation label, wants to make music with the rap superstar.
“Yes, I need the feature too,” she said.
