I-10 Basin Bridge highlights traffic closures in South LA

LAFAYETTE, La. (KPEL News) — For the next two weeks, the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development will be putting a spotlight on bridges in southern Louisiana. From regular maintenance to improvements, DOTD crews will work to make the bridges safer to drive.

Let’s start with the most famous and busiest bridge on the DOTD list – the Basin Bridge in St. Martin and Iberville Parishes on I-10. There will be various lane closures tonight (Wednesday) that you should be aware of:

  • There will be separate lane closures near Lake Pelba, Atchafalaya River and Whiskey Bay River for the installation of new navigation lights. The westbound outer lane will be closed Thursday morning from 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. This occurs from mile markers 123.0 – 121.9 (Atchafalaya River) and 128.7 – 127.2 (Whiskey Bay River). Crews were working the inside track eastbound from mile marker 120.1 to 121.1 (Lake Pelba) Tuesday night.
  • There will be alternate lane closures in both directions as crews conduct a sweeping operation from 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. on Thursday morning.

Daytime bridge/lane closures on I-10 in Acadia Parish

Let’s head down I-10 West where routine bridge inspections are taking place in Acadia Parish on Tuesday, March 14th and Thursday, March 16th.

  • Westbound I-10 Between Exit 80 – LA 13 (Crowley, Eunice) and Exit 76 – LA 91 (Estherwood, Iota): Tuesday 8:00 am to 1:00 pm alternate lane closures.
  • LA 13 (Crowley Eunice Highway), approximately 0.7 miles north of I-10: Alternate lane closures will occur Tuesday from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
  • LA 100 (Egan Highway), approximately 0.6 miles west of LA 13: Alternate lane closures will occur Tuesday from 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
  • Eastbound I-10 between Exit 76 – LA 91 (Esterwood, Iota) and Exit 80 – LA 13 (Crowley, Eunice): Alternating lanes will be closed Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

During all closures, roads are open to regular traffic, with a 16-foot lane restriction for oversized loads traveling through the work zone. Emergency vehicles have access to the area.

Daytime traffic closures on the Atchafalaya River Bridge, Bayou Ramous Bridge, Bayou Boeuf Bridge, and Oaklawn Bridge in the parish of St. Mary

For those of you heading east to the Parish of St. Mary, there will be construction work on four bridges during the day on Thursday 9th March.

  • Alternate lane closures will occur on US 90 at the Atchafalaya River Bridge, Bayou Ramous Bridge and Bayou Boeuf Bridge in both directions as workers sweep the bridge shoulders from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m
  • LA 323 at the Oaklawn Bridge between LA 87 and Irish Bend Road will be closed from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. for construction on the movable bridge. Emergency vehicles do not have access through the area during closure times. The detour consists of LA 87, LA 182 and LA 322.
  • MONDAY CLOSURE: US 90 will experience alternate lane closures in both directions between LA 3211 (Franklin) and LA 3215 (Garden City, Franklin) as crews conduct routine bridge inspections. This happens on Monday, March 13th from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The road will be open to regular traffic, with 16-foot lane restrictions for oversized loads traveling through the work zone. Emergency vehicles have access to the area.

Traffic closures on Pinhook Road in Lafayette during the day

If you’ve driven down Pinhook Road in Lafayette, you know there’s a certain section of the much-traveled road that’s a bit challenging (and somewhat dangerous) to navigate. It is the narrow stretch between the bridge over the Vermilion River and its intersection with University Avenue.

Well, this section is currently experiencing temporary lane closures until Tuesday 21st March. Lafayette Consolidated Government workers install a new liner on the inside of underground drains.

LCG crews are working specifically on the section of Pinhook Road between Mall Street and Jomela Drive, closing the northbound and southbound outer lanes, but only one side at a time, in small sections.

The contractor has planned to close the lanes during the day and evening except at the following times:

  • 7:00 a.m. – 8:30 a.m
  • 5:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m

Daytime traffic closures at the Johnston Street intersection until May 1st

The J-Turn installation project will continue on Johnston Street, which is causing traffic closures at its intersection with Duhon Road/Southcity Parkway, as DOTD said workers are building additional turn lanes on Johnston Street at the intersection.

The southbound and northbound left turn lanes at the intersection are now closed until Monday 1 May 2023, weather permitting.

In addition, the Johnston Street intersections at Palms Boulevard/Chateau Des Lions Boulevard and Middlepark Drive/Fountainhead Drive are now permanently closed to vehicular traffic.

Traffic closures at LA 93 (Apollo Road) in Scott during the day

On Saturday, Brent’s Loop will be closed at its intersection with LA 93 (Apollo Road) in Scott from 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., weather permitting. DOTD crews will install asphalt concrete at the intersection.

The road will be closed to through traffic, but access for emergency vehicles is still possible.

New roundabout being built on Gloria Switch Road & Mills Street

Another roundabout will be built in Lafayette, this time at the intersection of W. Gloria Switch Road and Mills Street.

Construction on the north portion of this roundabout began in January due to the closure of Mills Street from Benoit Rd to LA 98 (W. Gloria Switch Rd.) through Monday, April 3rd.

    • The diversion for northbound traffic is LA 98 (Gloria Switch) east to Desoto Rd., north to Benoit Rd and west to Mills St.
    • The diversion for southbound traffic is Benoit Rd. east to Desoto Rd., south to LA 98 (Gloria Switch) and west to Mills St.
    • Emergency vehicles did not have access through the area and were supposed to use the detour routes.
