Sparks was born in Phoenix, Arizona to parents Jodi W. Thomas and a man named Phillippi Sparks, who had previously played professional American football. Jordin’s younger brother is Phillippi “PJ” Sparks Jr., who is currently attending Arizona Christian University and plays football for the school. Her mother is of German, English, Scottish and Norwegian descent while her father is of African American descent. Both parents were born in the United States. She spent her childhood in the Ridgewood, New Jersey area while her father was a defensive tackle for the New York Giants.
Sparks continued his education at Northwest Community Christian School in Phoenix through eighth grade after moving there from New Jersey. Sparks had previously competed in and won a number of talent shows before appearing on American Idol. These competitions include Coca-Rising Cola’s Star, the Gospel Music Association Academy’s Overall Spotlight Award, America’s Most Talented Kids, the Colgate Country Showdown, and the 2006 Drug Free AZ Superstar Search. Pam Wiedmann, Jordin’s maternal grandmother, oversaw her career from the age of nine until 2007, when she won the American Idol title.
