Great pitching performance from four players, Louisiana did just enough on offense to win 2-0 in a Wednesday night game against Southeastern at Russo Park. The win was their seventh in their last eight games and keeps things going as they move towards the first Sun Belt Road series of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
For Louisiana, it was junior right-hander Tommy Ray who caught the mound start. Ray was effective early on and navigated the Lion lineup. He went three strong innings and didn’t allow runs with just one hit and one walk.
However, the Cajuns’ offensive got off to a slow start. They amassed seven hits from Lion starter Jay Long, but Long was effective at getting out of trouble. However, he had to be substituted injured after 3 2/3 innings. He left the game with two outs in first and second place, and his replacement, Reid Reynolds, gave up immediately and RBI singled Max Marusak to give Louisiana a 1-0 lead.
The Cajuns continued to concede hits but just couldn’t turn them into runs. They added a run at the bottom of sixth place on an RBI hit by pitch for Carson Roccaforte. However, Louisiana left the bases loaded soon after and it stayed at 2-0.
The story of the night was pitching for Louisiana. Coach Matt Deggs chose several different pitchers, all of whom played well. After Ray and Rawls played three innings each, Carson Fluno tossed for a scoreless seventh and Brendan Moody finished with two dominant innings to record his second save. Louisiana won for the fifth time in a row with a 2-0 win.
BIG NUMBER: 2
The Cajuns’ pitching held Southeastern by just two hits. It was a complete performance by the pitching team on a night when the offense struggled to score.
PLAYER: Peyton LeJeune
On a night when offense was hard to come by, Peyton LeJeune prevailed with two hits and a walk, reaching base in all but one at-bat. He’s one of the Cajuns’ players vying for more playing time, and tonight his case could move forward.
NEXT: The Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns will be back in the Sun Belt this weekend when they take on South Alabama in a three-game series in Mobile.
