In recent days, rumors have been circulating that the iPhone 15 family will be the first generation that will be able to access the 6GHz band opened up by Wi-Fi 6E routers.
Unfortunately, it appears that this report may only be half true. If the leaked internal documents prove to be legitimate, it appears that Wi-Fi 6E will only be reserved for the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Ultra.
It was also obtained by the dropout Unknown 21 (Opens in a new tab) And he shares it Mac rumors (Opens in a new tab)the documents show a basic outline of a smartphone with different antennas dotted around the frame.
The documents mention two upcoming devices — the D8x and D3y — and how they differ from the D7x and D2y (presumably the current-generation iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro). One part with two antennas has the designation “WiFi 6e (D8x only)”, which, assuming the document is real, all but confirms the omission for the regular iPhone 15.
The MacRumors report adds that the site has seen “additional documentation indicating that Wi-Fi 6E will be a Pro-only feature.”
Professional division
If you don’t own a Wi-Fi 6E router, you probably won’t care as much, but it’s still interesting what you have to say about how Apple displays its iPhone Pro devices.
In the past, the differences between the professional and non-professional models were obvious enough for even a tech novice to see the benefits of paying a little more. Think of the power (and physical number) of cameras, the more fluid screen and physical size of the Pro Max.
This generation has proven rather effective, as Pro models are often sold out while regular versions remain on the shelves. For tech geeks, the reasons seem obvious: The iPhone 14 and 14 Plus use last year’s chips, and they’re not a huge upgrade. Honestly, you’d be better off buying a refurbished iPhone 13 Pro, as I wrote before.
Apple is said to be considering a number of options to rectify the imbalance this year, including a possible price cut and a reduction in the differences between the Pro and the non-Pro. Recent rumors seem to support the latter, at least superficially, with the introduction of Dynamic Island and the introduction of a 48MP camera upgrade.
Something like WiFi 6E, though? It’s nowhere near enough mainstream attention, and it’s possible that Apple could limit it unnoticed except by hardcore users. Notably, these hardcore users are the ones who gravitate towards the Pro options anyway.
Of course, this could all be a ruse, but Unknownz21 has a pretty solid track record, as it owns I previously got a copy of iOS 14 (Opens in a new tab) prior to launch in 2020.
This document, says the leaker, is “just the tip of the iceberg,” promising MacRumors that more iPhone 15 leaks including full images will follow in March when the phone is in the engineering verification testing phase.
