Nottingham Forest are on the verge of signing Newcastle United midfielder Jonjo Shelvey before the transfer window closes on Tuesday.
Newcastle are currently carrying out a series of checks on both foreign and Premier League clubs to see if they are able to sign a central midfielder on loan before the window closes.
Telegraph sports understands that Shelvey is eager to make the switch and is almost back to full fitness after a calf injury.
The 30-year-old is one of Newcastle’s longest-serving players, having moved from Swansea City in 2016, but he is no longer first-choice and will be used as cover for Bruno Guimaraes if he stays at Tyneside.
Shelvey also missed much of the season with a hamstring injury, which saw him play just five games and a lone start against Crystal Palace in the Carabao Cup.
But Forest have identified the former Liverpool star as the midfield playmaker to help them stay in the Premier League.
