Social clubs should refrain from carrying large amounts of cash around at the end of the year and rather resort to digital methods, police warn.
Two men were robbed of about R200 000 in social club money at the Wonderpark Mall last week.
Rekord reported that two men from a Soshanguve social club were at the shopping centre to deposit the large amount of money into an ATM around 16:20 when they were allegedly ambushed and attacked by two armed men.
Akasia police spokesperson Constable Lindiwe Mabasa said one demanded they hand over the money at gunpoint.
According to reports one of the victims ran inside the bank to seek help and when he returned saw the suspects running away.
He shot at them, injuring one but the robbers managed to flee the scene in a getaway car.
The bank manager recovered a certain portion of the money, which is believed to have fallen at the scene, and it was handed over to the legal owners.
The robbers got away with about R190 000.
Mabasa urged residents to be cautious when handling money, especially at shopping malls and other business areas.
He advised social clubs members to ask for a police escort instead.
Meanwhile, the Akasia police station conducted an operation where over seven people were arrested for various crimes including selling liquor without a licence, possession of drugs, dealing in drugs and operating s second-hand goods store without a licence.
