Marriott International Celebrates the Power of “One in a Million” in Anti-Human Trafficking Milestone

One million Marriott International employees worldwide are trained to recognize and respond to signs of human trafficking

BETHESDA, MD., December 15, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — As the United Nations General Assembly recognizes Human Rights Day December 10, 2022, Marriott International today announced that it has successfully trained one million employees to recognize and respond to the signals of human trafficking. This marks an important moment in the global fight against human trafficking.

Marriott International’s Human Trafficking in Numbers Awareness Training

Marriott International first introduced human trafficking awareness training in 2016 and introduced enhanced training in 2021. The training was designed in partnership with Polaris, a leading non-profit organization specializing in combating human trafficking and helping human trafficking survivors. It includes scenario-based examples to help hotel employees recognize the signs of human trafficking in the real world and provides response guidance for managers.

“I couldn’t be more proud of our one million employees who have completed their training – they are truly one in a million,” said Anthony CapuanoDirector, Marriott International. “While it is heartbreaking to hear stories of human trafficking, Marriott is empowering employees around the world to learn the signs, act quickly, and help fight these horrific crimes. Today marks an important milestone in our journey to empower all employees employees to be trained by 2025. It only takes one employee to stop a human trafficking situation and we are pleased to have donated the training to the wider industry to increase impact.”

The training extends beyond Marriott International’s hotel portfolio. With the support of the American Hotel and Lodging Association Foundation, Marriott International continues to make the training available to the hospitality industry and beyond through ECPAT-United States.

Marriott International Training in Numbers

According to the latest estimates from the International Labor Organization, 28 million people are trafficked worldwide each year. Trafficking in human beings has increased significantly over the past five years. In 2021, 10 million more people were involved in human trafficking situations compared to 2016 global estimates, and women and children remain disproportionately vulnerable.
