–Grön drives GigaSystem™ to production CO2-negative, sustainable aviation fuel through a variety of renewable raw materials and the inclusion of biomass energy, CO2 capture and storage—
–JetBlue continues to build promising SAF partnerships as it advances its goal of achieving 10% SAF by 2030–
NEW YORK, Dec. 5, 2022 /CSRwire/ — JetBlue (Nasdaq: JBLU) and Fidelis New Energy, LLC (Fidelis) today announced a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to provide JetBlue with at least 92 million gallons of blended Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) from the Gron Fuels GigaSystem ™ by Fidelis in the port of Greater Baton Rouge, Louisiana. This SAF is expected to be delivered over a period of five years with a target start date of 2025.
With this letter of intent, Fidelis SAF with negative CO2 intensity is helping JetBlue achieve its goal of achieving 10 percent of its total fuel consumption as SAF on a blended basis by 2030. JetBlue is the only US airline to operate scheduled domestic flights with both available systems SAF manufacturers are delivering today and continue to support the burgeoning SAF market with significant commitments as the airline continues to expand its SAF mix. Grön Fuels’ GigaSystem SAF is innovatively designed to achieve negative life cycle carbon intensity through the integration of carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) and biomass energy with CCS (BECCS).
Gron Fuels’ GigaSystem, designed to be the largest and most efficient purpose-built renewable fuels facility in North America, will produce an estimated 1 billion gallons per year (65,000 barrels per day) of sustainable aviation fuel, renewable diesel and other low-carbon products. Grön Fuels continues to increase its efficiency and industry-leading carbon intensity by using process waste heat to generate electricity, producing biogas from by-products, and leveraging its highly flexible processing capabilities to produce carbon-negative SAF from a broad range of existing and emerging low-carbon intensity feedstocks.
“JetBlue is proud of our work to support a more sustainable aviation industry and today flies regularly with SAF. But with SAF accounting for less than 1% of our total fuel use, we need significantly more supply to reach our 2040 net zero goal,” said Sara Bogdan, Director of Sustainability and Environmental Social Governance, JetBlue, “With partners like Fidelis and their carbon With Grön Fuels Negative GigaSystem, we are not only supplying our own growing SAF needs, but are sending a strong signal that there is a significant demand for SAF. By introducing negative carbon intensity SAF across our network, we are also taking steps to achieve true carbon neutrality as an airline.”
“Carbon Negative SAF accelerates the goals of aviation industry participants who, like JetBlue, are truly committed to decarbonization in a pragmatic and timely manner,” said Dan Shapiro, co-founder and CEO of Fidelis. “We are pleased to partner Grön Fuels’ GigaSystem with JetBlue to provide CO2 negative SAF to meet its environmental goals.”
Bengt Jarlsjo, Co-Founder and COO of Fidelis added: “The aviation industry continues to increase its demand for SAF, with JetBlue leading the way. Not only will the scale of Grön Fuels’ GigaSystem help meet this growing need, but our commitment to innovative design allows us to do so in the most efficient way.” By vertically integrating three proven decarbonization components to produce CO2 -negative SAF, Fidelis’ proprietary high-performance carbon sink is expected to permanently sequester approximately 5 million tonnes per year of biogenic CO2 from the facility.
